Joel is a midwestern guy that was born and raised in Logansport, Indiana, on a farm. After high school, he went on to play collegiate football at Butler University, where he earned a B.S. in Marketing in 2003.
Joel relocated to Florida after graduation, where he was first discovered in Miami by ABC casting directors for the reality show “True Beauty,” produced by Ashton Kutcher and Tyra Banks. This catapulted his move to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career full-time.
Joel booked his first role in Hollywood in 2009, a recurring role on the classic daytime television favorite, “Days of Our Lives.” Rush booked four independent films and had roles in television shows, “Make It or Break It” (ABC Family), “Party Down” (STARZ), “Big Time Rush” (Nickelodeon), Betty White’s “Off Their Rockers” (ABC), “Femme Fatales” (Cinemax) and “Ironside” (NBC) from 2009 to 2013.
In 2012, Joel booked his first series regular role, as “Ralphie” on the Netflix series “The Ropes,” directed by Vin Diesel. In 2014, Rush booked his biggest and most rewarding series regular role, as “Eddie” in Tyler Perry’s “If Loving You Is Wrong,” and has not looked back. Joel gives Mr. Perry a great deal of credit for being the catalyst of positive change in both his personal and professional life.
Joel relocated to Atlanta, Georgia from Los Angeles in late 2015 where he is happily settled with his wife and new baby girl.
Along with “If Loving You Is Wrong” being the highest-rated drama on OWN network going into Season Four, Joel also has four films to be on the look out for: Naked, a Netflix Original starring Marlon Wayons; A Madea Family Funeral, starring Tyler Perry; Honey 4, where Rush is the lead love interest of Teyana Taylor, and The Trap, where he plays the lead officer opposite Mike Epps and T.I.
